As I kinda of said before in my previous blog post, I wanted to see something special. Not an awkwardly walking, high-priced, underachieving C3-PO wannabe. This is Tesla for goodness sake; I really, just like everyone else, just want to see the robot that makes it. The one we point to in the history books as the one that got the whole robot, droid, cyborg, end of the world thing going. Well, not the end of the world bit, hopefully 🙏
But joking aside, from what I've seen on YouTube, I think what we got was a soft mix of all of these things. We got the predictably awkward robotic walk-around on a tiny stage, while host, Elon Musk smiled broadly from ear to ear as he watched it slowly pull out some embarrassing 'drunk dad moves,' before taking a while to leave. It was an underwhelming sight visually as I felt I and many others had witnessed this all before. But with Tesla, it's all about what's under the hood and mainly, their endgame. Tesla are achievers. They're one of those rare companies out there that if they said they were going to reinvent the wheel, I'd believe them. That's why so many people are interested in what they have up their sleeves. So here were are, a year on from the announcement of Tesla making a robot. Elon Musk had promised a robot and we got one. Untethered I might add. We even got a video of how Optimus sees things as it moves around its environment performing tasks, and it does all this using Tesla's self driving car technology.
For me it's about where this is all going, not where it is and Elon didn't disappoint, he's got the money, team and the vision to pull this off. It's about the future. Like Musk, I don't want this 2022 model in my life yet, I'll be interested, nay jealous of those who buy it in 2025-27, sure it'll be good, of that I have no doubt. No, I'm more than happy to wait until the 2032 version; when all the kinks are ironed out. I'm in it for the long game, people and so is Elon. This is only what they, as a company, have achieved so far in a year. Imagine what it'll look like in 10!
Now I've been watching robotics develop on T.V my whole life, and just getting these things to walk like a person is extremely hard, just watch the early videos from Boston Dynamics...
Then you have battery power. That's a lot of weight and moving parts, you're going to need some powerful, long lasting batteries and their going to need to be small enough not put the robot off balance. On top of all this, you need intelligence. Ai is a tough nut to crack, but it's really coming along in leaps and bounds. I follow Károly Zsolnai-Fehér's Two Minute Papers on YouTube and he keeps me posted on all the latest mind blowing technology advancements. Here's one he did a little while ago showing OpenAI learning to play Hide and Seek. It's an amazing and an insightful watch...
I think that's all I can say on the this today, but I hope you've enjoyed it. I am very impressed with Tesla's progress and can't wait to get further updates on its evolution into a working consumer product.
Below is an eleven or so minute video on all the highlights from the discussion on Tesla's Optimus robot 🤖
